Career Development

The scope

ING Australia identified the need for a sustainable career development framework that would enhance the engagement of its 2,000+ employees.

Our Involvement

In May 2007 MartinJenkins consultant Chloe Anderson was engaged by ING Australia to develop 3 career development tools:

  • a detailed, drill-down career development pathway for customer service employees
  • a detailed, drill-down career development pathway for finance employees, and
  • a high level career development framework and pathway encompassing all business units.

The scope of this project extended to the development of a high-level and drill-down version of career development opportunities for all business units.

This involved the design of a framework which would meet the career development needs of current and future employees, while being flexible enough to accommodate smaller changes in the business environment.

The focus of the career pathway was on demonstrating opportunities within ING, and clearly articulating the generic and specialist skills, knowledge, qualifications, competencies and job fit required in each area of the business.

The framework and pathway incorporated feedback from consultation with senior managers throughout the business. The consultation process ensured that the resulting product was user-friendly and met the needs of all business units.

The Outcome

The outcome is a sustainable career development framework and pathway that facilitates effective career planning for more than 2000 employees.

The tool will be used by employees and managers to facilitate career conversations and explore future development opportunities within ING. The framework and pathway have been incorporated into induction materials and will be made available to all employees via the Intranet.
