“Designing the right solution”: new opportunities in the creative arts

The scope

The National Institute of Creative Arts and Industries (NICAI) is a large faculty of the University of Auckland; comprising the Schools of architecture and planning, dance, music and fine arts.

In 2006 NICAI was funded by the Tertiary Education Commission to scope the development an innovative research centre in the field of Design.

Our Involvement

MartinJenkins Director, Doug Martin, and consultant Lis Cowey, were engaged to undertake a scoping study to explore the potential of launching the new centre, working with an Australian design academic. Our report canvassed options for the Faculty’s future development of a centre. It leveraged off analysis of international trends in design research and education, analysis of NICAI’s strategic positioning, labour market trends and skill supply issues, and our ability to draw perspectives of key stakeholders into the mix.

We identified a range of potential funding sources and helped develop a funding proposal.

The Outcome

We have continued to advise NICAI as the Faculty works to develop and implement the concepts presented in our report.

The MartinJenkins Difference

Our cross-disciplinary analysis synthesised and sifted a range of ideas to identify a clear and practical way forward to meet NICAI’s development goals.

NICAI benefited from our thorough knowledge of government’s strategic requirements in tertiary education, our understanding of the mechanisms of public funding and our pragmatic approach to organisational development.

MartinJenkins knowledge and experience of government policy processes, established networks and knowledge of relevant sectors helped ‘pave the way’ and facilitate the entire process. The result was a responsive and time-efficient solution for the NICAI.
