Martin is an applied scientist, who has a track record of utilising scientific information in the development, implementation and evaluation of natural resource management activities.
Martin understands how science can be applied within the resource management framework in New Zealand to achieve positive outcomes, including in strategy and policy frameworks. He took a lead role in coordinating scientific support for the development of Auckland Council’s Unitary Plan and contributes technical expertise to the government’s Freshwater Reform programme.
Martin also uses his applied science skills to advise the primary sector on environmental management, including the design and review of monitoring programmes and strategies for contributing and responding to policy and regulatory frameworks.
Martin is an accomplished science communicator, and is able to quickly distil complex scientific issues and communicate effectively to a wide range of audiences.
Martin joined the MartinJenkins team in October 2016. In his previous roles in regional government, research institutes and more recently, in a commercial consultancy, he has led and coordinated a wide range of environmental research, monitoring and evaluation projects. This included leading a programme of review and re-design to improve Auckland Council’s state of the environment monitoring programme to ensure best practice and fitness for purpose.
Martin is an active member of the scientific community, publishing and reviewing papers for international journals and maintains an Honorary Lecturer position at the University of Auckland.
