Rachel is a data scientist with experience in complex data analysis, data modelling, data cleaning, and data manipulation, including working with the Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI). She enjoys applying her deep technical skills to help solve real-world problems for clients

Rachel joined MartinJenkins in 2022 from the Ministry of Education, where her data science skills supported the evaluation of education policies and interventions. Before this she worked at Statistics NZ as an Analyst, supporting the methodology for household surveys and the quarterly refresh of data within Stats NZ’s IDI.

Rachel has gained deep statistical knowledge through her studies in Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Otago, and through her work at Stats NZ and the Ministry of Education. She has strong coding skills in R and SQL. She is also an experienced IDI researcher, having used this powerful research database for around three years on several projects.

Rachel has been involved in Scouts Aotearoa for over 15 years and loves walking/hiking and the outdoors.

Examples of Rachel’s work

  • Working in the integrated data team within Stats NZ, where she focussed on updating the quarterly IDI refresh as well as answering researchers’ questions.

  • Working in the Statistical methods team within Stats NZ, supporting the methodology for household surveys. Her focus was on supporting the Household Economic Survey (HES) for 2019/2020.

  • Working in the Analytics and Insights team within the Ministry of Education (MOE), focussing on analysis to support evaluations of interventions run by MOE. This included a lot of analysis and data manipulation with the IDI.

Rachel’s qualifications

She has a Bachelor of Arts and Science (majoring in Mathematics and Statistics) from the University of Otago, and a Master of Applied Statistics from Victoria University of Wellington.
