An experienced policy professional and adviser to government ministers, CEOs and senior managers, Tony has applied his sharp problem-solving skills across a range of sectors – from regional and Māori economic development, to primary industries and the environment

Tony is a versatile generalist, combining astute, pragmatic problem-solving abilities with strong communications skills.

Before he joined us in 2019 he was a Principal Adviser to a Deputy Director-General at the Ministry for Primary Industries, and previously a Ministerial Adviser to the Minister of Finance and other senior Ministers.

Tony has a strong record of working collaboratively to develop solutions to complex and cross-cutting challenges across a wide range of sectors –including economic development, tertiary education, skills and employment, primary industries, and the environment.

With his significant experience in political and public service roles, he has a strong practical understanding of government and legislative processes.

Examples of Tony's work:

  • Led a successful $120 million budget bid within a wider cross-agency package of sustainable land use initiatives

  • A member of the interagency team that designed the Provincial Growth Fund and secured Cabinet approval for the Fund

  • Developed and implemented an inter-agency approach to managing Provincial Growth Fund approvals, and designed, implemented and chaired MPI’s internal triage, review and advice process for Fund applications

  • Advanced previously stalled work on a private-sector afforestation fund, progressing it to a signed MOU between the CEOs of Air New Zealand, the Ministry for the Environment and the Ministry for Primary Industries

  • Designed and drafted a forward-looking initial funding mechanism and delegations for the One Billion Trees Programme.

Tony has a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) from the University of Otago.
